5 Winter Books for Toddler Girls
Its that time of year when our ability to go outside and play is getting less and less…the weather just doesn’t allow us to go on really long walks or make trips to the park. We also don’t allow Caroline a lot of screen time (mostly none unless she is sick), so having good books is crucial (but mostly for me!). Sometimes, I feel at a loss as to what to buy because there are just so many children’s books out there…its hard to dig through them and find the ones that are true gems. So, I thought that I would share the books that I have discovered…books that have that fusion of fantastic writing and beautiful illustrations.
- The Mitten by Jan Brett – This fun little board book based on a Ukrainian folktale is all about the misadventures of some woodland animals and a white mitten. The story is charming and it also is a great opportunity for little ones to be introduced to the different animals of the forest. This book is slightly abbreviated in the text, but Jan Brett also has a Christmas Treasury which is an unabridged compilation of all her winter books for children.
- The Nutcracker by Susan Jeffers – I love the tradition of going to see the Nutcracker every year at Christmas, but she is just too little right now. But, this book is a fantastic introduction to the Nutcracker story before we do take her to the ballet. The book isn’t too wordy and there are lavish illustrations on every page.
- Little House on the Prairie Picture Book – The stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder have been reworked and illustrated for little ones to enjoy. Very simple text conveys the spirit of stories and the illustrations are in keeping with the original artist, Garth Williams. It is a perfect introduction to the series and the three winter related books are Christmas in the Big Woods, Winter Days in the Big Woods, and Winter on the Farm.
- Corduroy’s Christmas by Don Freeman – This engaging lift-the-flap book follows Corduroy having fun at Christmas with friends. It is a sweet book, but also a great way to familiarize little ones with the sights and sounds of the holidays. The full text picture book without the flaps is Corduroy’s Christmas Surprise.
- Stowaway in a Sleigh by Roger Mader – This is a favorite in our house, probably because we have a cat that looks exactly like Slipper (the cat in the book). It is a sweet and short story that is about a curious cat’s trip to the North Pole.
